The Stages Upon Which Life Plays Out

While the planets represent the 'what' (the drives and energies) and the signs represent the 'how' (the style of expression), the Houses represent the 'where' – the specific areas of life or fields of experience where these energies manifest. Think of the natal chart as a stage (divided into 12 houses) and the planets as actors performing in different costumes (signs) within those specific stage settings (houses).

The chart is typically divided into 12 segments (using a specific calculation method like Placidus, which is common). The start of the 1st House is marked by the Ascendant (AC), and the other house cusps follow in counter-clockwise order. The sign on a house cusp influences the matters of that house, and any planets located within a house bring their energy very strongly into that life area.
