The Planets (& Points)
The Actors on the Astrological Stage
The Zodiac signs describe the "style" or "how," the planets and other "luminaries" are expressed. The planets, Sun, Moon and other calculated points represent the "what": the core drives, psychological functions, and different energies or "actors" within a chart. Where these bodies and points fall by sign and house, and how they interact through aspects, help astrologers build a picture of a person's overall astrological pattern.
Here's a brief introduction to the celestial bodies commonly used in modern Western astrology, including the North Node (a calculated point related to life path):
☉ The Sun
Represents your core identity, ego, vitality, sense of self, purpose, and consciousness. It's the 'hero' of your chart, signifying your main drive for self-expression and how you shine your light in the world.
☽ The Moon
Represents your emotions, instincts, subconscious patterns, habits, needs for security and nurturing, and your inner self. It reflects how you react emotionally and what makes you feel comfortable and safe.
☿ Mercury
Represents communication, thinking processes, logic, learning style, perception, and how you exchange information. It governs your intellect, speech, writing, and short trips.
♀ Venus
Represents love, attraction, relationships, social interactions, values, pleasure, beauty, art, and finances. It describes your 'love language', what you find beautiful, and how you relate to others harmoniously.
♂ Mars
Represents action, energy, drive, assertion, physical vitality, courage, desire, passion, and conflict style. It shows how you go after what you want, express anger, and assert your will.
♃ Jupiter
Represents expansion, growth, luck, optimism, abundance, wisdom, beliefs, higher learning, and long-distance travel. It indicates where you tend to find opportunities and experience good fortune, and what your broader philosophy on life is.
♄ Saturn
Represents structure, limits, responsibility, discipline, lessons, maturity, challenges, time, authority, and karma. It shows where you face obstacles, need to build structure, feel responsibility, and learn important life lessons.
♅ Uranus
Represents change, innovation, rebellion, originality, sudden breakthroughs, unpredictability, technology, groups, and humanitarianism. It indicates where you seek freedom, express uniqueness, and experience sudden shifts.
♆ Neptune
Represents dreams, intuition, spirituality, illusion, confusion, compassion, transcendence, escapism, art, and idealism. It shows where you might be most sensitive, imaginative, prone to illusion, or seek a connection to something larger than yourself.
♇ Pluto
Represents transformation, power (both personal and external), death/rebirth cycles, subconscious forces, intensity, obsession, healing, and elimination. It points to areas of deep psychological transformation and where you encounter power dynamics.
☊ North Node (True Node)
The North Node isn't a physical body, but a calculated point in space where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path). In astrology, it represents your soul's path in this lifetime, your karmic direction, the lessons you are here to learn, and the qualities you need to develop for growth and fulfillment.
☋ The South Node
Located directly opposite the North Node, the South Node represents your past comfort zones, innate talents or ingrained habits (sometimes thought of as reflecting past life experiences). While familiar and easy, leaning too heavily on South Node patterns can hinder growth towards your North Node path. Understanding it helps recognize default tendencies versus areas requiring conscious development.
