Synastry: The Astrology of Relationships
Comparing Charts for Compatibility
Now that we've looked at the building blocks – planets, signs, houses, and aspects – within a single natal chart, we can explore Synastry. Synastry is the branch of astrology focused specifically on relationship compatibility by comparing two individuals' natal charts.
The fundamental idea is to see how the energies (planets) in your chart interact with the energies in another person's chart, and vice versa. This reveals the potential dynamics, areas of ease, points of friction, and overall chemistry between two people.
How Synastry Works
Imagine placing one person's chart wheel directly on top of the other's, aligning them by the zodiac signs. Astrologers then look for key interactions:
- Inter-Chart Aspects: This is one of the primary techniques used by the Astro-Grid. We look for significant angles (Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine, Opposition) occurring between a planet in Person A's chart and a planet in Person B's chart. For example, is your Sun (☉) making a Trine (△) aspect to their Moon (☽)? Is your Mars (♂) Square (□) their Venus (♀)? Each connection tells a story about how those specific energies interact between you.
- House Overlays: We can also see which of Person B's houses Person A's planets fall into, and which of Person A's houses Person B's planets fall into. For example, if your Sun falls into their 7th House of Partnership, you may activate that area of their life significantly. House overlays add another dimension to synastry by showing where each person tends to have an important influence on the other's life.
Understanding Compatibility through Aspects
The aspects formed between two charts reveal the essential 'wiring' of the relationship connection:
- Harmonious Aspects (Trines △, Sextiles ✶): Generally indicate ease, flow, natural support, shared values, and opportunities for cooperation between the planetary energies involved. They contribute to chemistry and understanding.
- Challenging Aspects (Squares □, Oppositions ☍): Represent dynamic tension, friction, areas needing adjustment, and potential conflict. Some challenging aspects can also create strong attraction or a powerful "spark," while others primarily describe areas of difficulty. They often require conscious effort, compromise, and growth from both individuals to navigate successfully and can point to important lessons within the relationship.
- Conjunctions (☌): Indicate a powerful blending or merging of the energies. This creates a very strong connection, but its effect (positive or negative) depends heavily on the nature of the planets involved. It signifies areas where the individuals strongly impact each other.
It's important to remember that a 'good' synastry chart rarely consists of only harmonious aspects. A mix of easy and challenging aspects often indicates a more realistic and dynamic relationship. The Astro-Grid analyzes numerous inter-chart aspects and house overlays to evaluate compatibility in five important areas – Overall, Romance, Sex, Friendship, and Money – and provides detailed interpretations to help explain the relationship dynamics behind those scores.
